Associate Professor Jonathan Risner has won IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Research Travel Grant for his research project Home Movies in Francoist Spain, 1939-1975. In his investigation, Professor Risner examines films that were produced outside of official control during this political period (1939-1975). Previous studies on the subject have focused on the official image as presented in films funded by the dictatorship, most of them in the category of state-sponsored newsreels ideologically aligned to praise the agenda of the regime. The innovative aspect of the project is to study a body of movies that may provide a different perspective of the historical context during the dictatorship by looking into common representations of everyday life from the lenses of Spaniards of different origins and socioeconomic levels who recorded these materials at that time.
